The Basics Of Milk Allergies

Allergic reactions to milk happen when the body reacts unfavorably to one or more of the proteins found in cow’s milk. There is a difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance.

A milk allergy is one of many food allergies and some of the symptoms can include: wheezing, vomiting, skin rash, hives, diarrhea, and constipation. There is no accepted length of time for a reaction occur, in some people it occurs within minutes of ingestion, while in others it can take hours or days.

The difference between milk allergies and lactose intolerance is that while milk allergies are a reaction to a product within the milk itself (one of the proteins), lactose intolerance is caused by the body’s lack of production of the enzyme lactase.

The treatment for milk allergies is the same as it is for lactose intolerance. Nothing. The only treatment available at this time is the avoidance of all milk products.

Products to avoid in case you suffer from milk allergies:

• Butter
• Yogurt
• Cheese
• Milk
• Cream

Processed products that also are known to contain some milk or milk products in them:

• Bread
• Margarine
• Potato Chips
• Crackers
• Prepared Meats
• Soy Cheese
• Soups
• Gravies
• Cakes

One popular substitution for both children and adults suffering through this is “rice milk”.

Milk allergies are the most common for of food allergies.

Though annoying and confusing, milk allergies are not the end of the world and can be avoided by abstaining from milk products. Possible substitutes for both adults and children include Rice Milk.
