Carpets With Regular Cleaning Vs Hard Floor
By Nick Gonnella

This is a debate which people in the cleaning and flooring industry hear over and over. Which is more hygienic and healthy, carpets or hard floors?

Most people would say hard floors and give the reason that carpets harbour all the dirt and allergens which can just be wiped away on a hard floor. What most people don’t realise is that your carpet acts as a filter. It is the filter to your home and the fact that it holds all the dirt and pollutants which you bring into your home is the reason why it is a much more healthy alternative to hard floors.

Dust builds up extremely quickly and on a hard floor it is just waiting to be kicked up into the air and inhaled. Apart from normal household dust there is also dust mite feces to think about. The sub pellets in their feces can cause allergic reactions to many people and can stay in the air for 20 minutes when kicked up. On a carpet however, these same particulates are trapped and controlled.

Now any filter needs cleaning because as soon as that filter becomes saturated it ceases to work and becomes useless. This is why regular vacuuming and professional carpet cleaning is so important.
A good hepa-filter vacuum should be used to avoid the re-disbursal of allergens and the bag should be changed outside the home to avoid dust being accidentally released back into the home.
Professional carpet cleaning should only be done by competent company which is IICRC registered.
